TheChesapeakeBay Foundation seeks an Associate Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations to be based at its Philip Merrill Environmental Center headquarters located in Annapolis, MD.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. Established in 1967, CBF has a staff of approximately 185 employees working in offices in Annapolis Maryland; Richmond and VA Beach, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C., and in 15 field education program locations. Our staff and volunteer corps work throughout the region educating students and adults, advocating for clean water polices, restoring waterways, and litigating when necessary.

CBF's headquarters office in Annapolis, MD is the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, the world’s first U.S. Green Build Council’s LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened The Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The Brock Center is one of the most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in the world.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

The Associate Director is an integral part of CBF’s Development Department and the Corporate, Foundation, & Grants team, which is responsible for raising $6M annually from foundations, corporations, and government agencies to support CBF’s programsThis position is primarily responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major grants ($20,000+/annually) from foundations and corporations to support CBF’s annual operating and campaign fundraising goals. The Associate Director will also have program management responsibilities for the corporate program, including creating and executing a comprehensive corporate fundraising strategy consisting of philanthropic grants and event sponsorships. The ideal candidate will: have a minimum of six years of development work experience, with at least four years of demonstrated success in grant writing and grant management - preferably within the conservation/environmental sector; be comfortable interacting with high-profile donors and senior leadership; and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. This position will be based out of CBF’s Annapolis, MD office, with periodic travel throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Essential functions include:

 

  1. Grant Writing & Relationship Management - Raise philanthropic support for CBF’s annual operating and campaign goals by developing and maintaining relationships with major level ($20,000+/year) foundation and corporate donors:
  • Maintain and grow a portfolio of about 40 corporate and foundation donors and prospects for cultivation and solicitation through personal interaction, written solicitations, and stewardship actions that include emails, calls, letters, meetings, site visits, Discovery Trips, and other donor events.
  • Write creative and compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, concept papers, sponsorship requests, impact reports, etc. in cooperation with program staff and budget managers, meeting strict deadlines and following generally accepted development procedures and/or specific grantmaker guidelines.
  • Track portfolio assignments and deadlines using CBF’s Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) system, Salesforce, and project management tools, ensuring that all assigned actions are completed and regularly updated. 

 

 

  1. Stewardship – Steward on-going relationships between CBF and corporate and foundation donors:
  • Facilitate grant compliance by working internally with program staff, budget managers, and Finance Department to meet the terms of grant agreements, including the development and timely submission of interim and final reports to donors.
  • Send stewardship mailings and invites to donor events in coordination with the Donor Stewardship Manager to inform and thank donors.
  • Offer site visits and other hands-on Bay experiences in coordination with the Discovery Trip Program Manager to deepen donor connections to the Bay and maximize financial impact.
  • Help shape key philanthropy-related messaging in cooperation with the Senior Development Writer including the annual report, impact reports, and other collateral to demonstrate donor impact.

 

  1. Cultivation – Cultivate new funding relationships to build the donor pipeline:
  • Coordinate with the Director of Research and Prospect Management to identify prospective corporate and foundation donors through targeted research.
  • Develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies, including collaborating with program staff to develop and present projects that align with prospect goals.
  • Facilitate outreach to donor prospect, including CBF leadership and board engagement, if necessary.
  • Document and track prospect research, outreach, and solicitation in CRM system.

 

  1. Program Management – Manage key responsibilities for Foundations, Corporations, & Grants team:
  • Analyze corporate program and develop short and long term goals, including recommendations on philanthropic support, event sponsorship, cause-related marketing, promotional relationships, and employee engagement, in cooperation with the Director, Major Gift Team and the Manager of Events & Promotions.
  • Help develop corporate revenue budget projections each fiscal year, and monitor and communicate progress towards the goal.
  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve the annual corporate revenue goal.
  • Assist in evaluation of team fundraising and activity in relation to established corporate and foundation program revenue goals.
  • Creatively write and/or edit corporate and foundation proposal and report templates in conjunction with the Senior Development Writer.
  • Provide editing and grant management support to members of the Major Gifts team

 

  1. Other – Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: 
  • Help develop team fundraising goals, objectives, and processes.
  • Assist in developing donor/prospect profiles, briefing materials for donor meetings, visit lists, and recommendations for engaging CBF leadership
  • Participate in organization-wide meetings, inter-departmental teams, and other meetings and conferences as designated.
  • Lead, coordinate or assist with specific projects as assigned.

Requirements

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required, plus six to ten years of experience in fundraising/ development and demonstrated success in securing corporate and foundation gifts and grants through written grant proposals. Thorough knowledge of Development department functions combined with a knowledge of Salesforce, Raisers Edge or similar Constituent Relationship Management software required. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office software. Exceptional time-management skills needed to handle multiple, concurrent projects with strict deadlines. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills and a highly professional image with the ability to interact with colleagues, donors, and volunteer leaders at all levels is required. Experience with corporate philanthropic giving and cause-related marketing is preferred. A commitment to the environment and a passion for the mission of CBF is also preferred.
